Druglord "Motherfucker Rising" Digital EP Review

Combination of: Electric Wizard, some Sabbath, Cough, and drone (Sunn 0))), Boris, Earth).

Slow plodding - which i usually don't dig as much. i like a groove in the riffs. But this is so heavy and bad ass; i cannot deny. When they "speed up" to mid pace, there is a groove. Fuzz ("...as musicians like to call it...") and feedback. "MFR" comes in like Thor's Hammer. Slow as hell. This is the soundtrack of the Gods contemplating mankind's demise. "Cleansed" has a cool single note walk. It picks up to a steady pac. "Eternal Grave" is a severed zombie torso crawling at you in a locked cellar. Evil, heavy - and moments of some indie influence; never light or catchy, just layered nuances. "Whores of the Reich" gets tougher and aggressive, but never breaks into the gallop i expect. It still is cool though. Like a Woolly Mammoth walking with concrete feet.
This is like an Old Grand Dad hangover the morning after you slept with your sister. i can't get the clean off.
RVA keeps cranking out the best music in the country. and the dirtiest, grimiest. This is wicked good, even.

CHEST 2011 ep Review

Chest from Finland deliver an incredible 4 song ep. Not too sludge - while they can get dark; this is mostly a balls to the wall doom release. Not as Zeppelin influenced as a COM, per se. Mostly just heavy ass riffs with pounding drums. This is not just another doom band trapped in redundacy. They mix it up enough to stand out.

Control "Punk Rock Ruined My Life" LP Review

Control "Punk Rock Ruined My Life" Durty Mick/Step-1

Don't let the title or the leather/mohawk adorned character of the cover fool you; this is what British Oi! should like. A big nod to Condemned 84; heavy, fierce. fast oi. Enraged lyrics of dissent and rebellion, Control shout about the present generation, living outside society, being crucified in the media, and political policies that oppress the working class.

Songs like "No Hope for Heroes" aren't afraid to go for the big rock sound with the production. And when you combine a "hey hey hey" stomp and a "na na na" catchy refrain and a thick trombone mixed well and anti-war lyrics, it pays off. The mid paced "Rebellion in My Blood" (again with a catchy "na na na" chorus)adds some screaming leads to the mix.

The album starts with "Punk Rock Ruined My Life" (but i wouldn't change a thing); which will have all of us over 30's raising a pint. The next tune, "High Time I Hung Up My Boots" ("no way that i'm ever going to do it"). Based on a boucy bass line, a punkier jump, and even an addition of a mandolin. This will be the night ender at the bar to get everyone to sing along. "Ian Huntley" is a crushing bruiser, a fast-paced tirade of enmity.

Mature, critical, angry lyrics over hard, thick oi with immaculate production.
