Night Birds "The Other Side of Darkness" Review

Night Birds "The Other Side of Darkness" Grave Mistake Records

The first time i heard Agent Orange, it was from a friend the lent me Agent Orange "This is the Voice", Dag Nasty "Field Day", and Descendents "All". He was a best friend and we skated everyday. But he was 4 years older than i was. And i wanted everything to be Sick of It All or Slapshot. Murphy's Law was the lightest i got. Well years later i fully embraced Descendents "Milo...", "Bonus Fat", and "IDWTGU". BUt to this day, "All" bugs me. And while "Wigout at Denko's" is awesome and "Can I Say" is a classic that i blast frequently, i will never go back to "Field Day".

All that said, Agent Orange i nnever went back to until about 2 or 3 years ago. And i knew i missed many years of joy that could have had listening to "Living in Darkness". I have not returned to "This is the Voice", but i get it. I also have spent the last decade amassing an intense fondness for surf and garage. And if you can relate to that, then you need to hear Night Birds. This band is refreshing and intense.

Night Birds play dark, frantic surf punk. Yeah it's catchy; but it is even more than that. Cynical lyrics of human error are screamed over lo-fi beauty. Noise fills your ear, dragging you into the chaos of the frenzied beats. Deep, low drums bounce over the thin metal scrapings of taut punk guitar riffs.

Here we get the inverse of what someone would envision when they hear "surf music:. No sun, no beach, no pastel or neon long shorts. The foreboding doomed tunes project images of a cold, isolated east coast winter. Take "Can't Get Clean". We can hear the familiar bouncing surf beat; when stripped down, you could imagine some bopping blondes in polka dot tw pieces and leis, alternating crossed arms and fists in a dance. But the ominous "Ahhhhs" and dismal twang and desperate cries of the vocals; paired with "i wash all day, i scrub all night...but i can't get clean", skew our fantasy to a dark image.

Take the surf movies of the 60s and then picture the B-Movie monster movies of the same era. This is the Nights Birds. The group exist to reflect the wrongs and exploitative results of human greed that those films dictated. Atomic mishaps now come in musical form. Instead of wasting days in horizontal paralysis as the Pacific Ocean laps against your bronzed feet, "Landfill Land" paints the landscape with the trash and rot of modern society. A pumping beat drives a wandering surf lead, each verse building to a chorus of climactic fury. The layers of sound culminate in a song that is impossible to resist. This is crafted to propel leather jacket punks to jump and spill their beer on you in the sparsely filled dive bar you have landed in tonight. Every song is amazing and stands alone. Night Birds never slow their pace. The start of side B is the 1:22 surf jam, "Day after Trinity" and it is evil. Next we jump into "Hoffman Lens" which is reminiscent of early Descendents with the hypnotic guitar laid over the discordant speed filled strums and robotic drums and scathing "We'll all be living in a new third world". Feed back adorns the indulgent and way too relate-able "Sex Tape". For the despondent recluse, we finally have an anthem. "The Other Side of Darkness" is a fantastic punk album. Original and invigorating in a genre that tends to repeat itself frequently. I am quickly ensnared by the giant octopus emerging from the polluted lake. Each tentacle grasping me pinpoints my insecurity, fear, paranoia, anxiety, self-hate, shame, impotence, and xenophobia (yeah, that's eight, bitch). The play on Agent Orange's classic debut, "Living in Darkness", allows Night Birds to wear their influences on their sleeve. All the while they can invert it to make it a bastardization of the same homage. This is east coast. We are disconnected, bitter, jaded, and weathered.

"Failed Species" summons low tom\nes and blistering beats balanced with a female "ahhh" melody, while allowing the misanthropes a sweet "i told you so"moment. Back on side A, "Neon Grey" (awesome title!!!) gives us the same speed and confusion drenched in feedback" "Born of Man and Woman" is as close to mid-paced as we'll get. It certainly holds a catchy beat.

I can not recommend this album enough. Depression and panic fit into the epitome of their aural equal. This is pessimism personified. So beware the evil and greed of man. But if that's what births Night Birds, well, i will raise my glass to the demise of this species.

Best of 2011: Part 8, Hip Hop

If Premo does 25, i do 25:

Best song of the year " Stop Whatcha Doin" Apathy feat Celph-Titled prod by DJ Premier

Producer of the Year: Statik, no doubt. He worked harder this year than anyone. Joints all over this list and collabo EPs/LPs on and off this list. Best beat on PH; and Killer ones on Aathy, ED OG and more

1. Rashad & Confidence "The Element of Surprise" ...Damn Right!!! Out of nowhere - never heard of these guys. and they deliver the smartest LP of the year. Intricate lyrics and rhyming scheme over 90's style classic beats. Flawless!

(FFO: Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Nas Halftime, Mos Def, Malcolm & Martin, REKS)

2. Malcom & Martin "Life Doesn't Frighten Me..." Pretty much the same! Marco Polo and DJ Revolution beats. Smart and playful dual lyrics. Passionate and intelligent. Brilliant album that i keep going back to. Fresh ad rejuvenating style for a stale genre.

3. Apathy "Honkey Kong" Yeah! While "Wanna Snuggle?!!?" saw Ap experiment with many different musical styles; this is strictly for the boom bap!! Best rapper out there. Just raw and grimy. Many hot Joints - and my song of the year.

4. Joell Ortiz "Free Agent" The hottest spitter eschews the SH pop beats for old school boom bap. Untouchable.

i place M&M and R&C on top, because of the social lyrics and introspective approach.

The rest:
5. Action Bronson & Statik Selektah "Well Done" Rough as hell. These guys get to gether and take no prisoners. Money and Bitches and Weed talk - better than most. Cop thi.

6. Saigon "The Greatest Story Never Told" This album has everything. Great stry telling. From theheart (fro the street) tales. No bullshit over ill beats. Almost like a Raekwon. *(plus, "It's Cold")

7. Pharoahe Monch "W.A.R." not only tricky wordplay - but smart as hell and down for the social causes.

8. DC the Midi Alien "Avenger Airwaves"
POLITICS!!! the smartest comp ever. Wake the fuck Up!!

9. Bumpy Knuckles & Statik Selektah "Lyrical Workout" - Bumpy is in my top5. Can't fuck with his attitude or his down and dirty flows. And with Statik providing dusty beats, this is ridiculous.

10. Ill Bill & Vinnie "Heavy Metal Kingz" adoring their love of metal and conspiracy theory - these friends deliver a grimy string of fury. Beats are awesome. Lyrics will blow you back.

11. Torae "For The Record"
One of the best new dudes; killer flow. Great beats. Torae has one of my favorite flowsout there - i miss an all Marco Polo lp - but Statik and Preem show up, so it's all good.

12. Apollo Brown & Hassaan Mackey "Daily Bread"
Apollo make ssouls albums. i could ust listen to him. Add a dope rapper; give them one 24 hour period; and you get a bomb ass album

13. Slaine "A World With No Skies"
The genius wordsmith gets a little poppy on a few; but this DMS soldier brings the dark world of the ugly streets all the sam. "Shoot You" and "99 Bottles" and "Ghosts" stand out

14. REKS "R.E.K.S."
Creative spark-plug kills it again

15. Vakill "Armor of God" The most under-rated lyricist out there.

16. Ed OG "A Face in the Crowd" The real elder stateaman. Strong flow, multi-syllable rhymes; humble and mature over soulful street beats

17. MOP & Snowgoons "Sparta" My boy said - "Snowgoons are too chill for the energy of M.O.P." - i get the point, and concede it as valid somewhat...but this LP still has fire and it thumps

18. REEF the Lost Cauze and Snowgoons "Your Favorite Rapper" I love Reef. Just true street attitude and clever. And nice to ohave Snowh=goons provide a consistent feel throughout the lp

19. Kool G Rap "Riches, Royalty, Recpect" He still has a machine gun delivery of syllabic mastery over a 70s score.

20. Esoteric "Boston Pharoah" while it isn't "1212" - kills it though. Greatest lyricist in hip hop today? yes. Add Blacastan and you get a winner.

21. The Roots "Undone" Most original lp for sure. A concept album told backwards. beautiful and solemn

22. WC "Revenge of the Baracuda" One of my favorites since "Ain't A Damn Thing Changed" ...he still has gritty style that bobs your head. And uses beats that are underground. A clever humorous and honest rapper.

23. Murs & Ski-Beatz "Love and Rockets. vol I"...a few too many girl songs for me - but when he harnesses his power, he his on point. I love Murs! Damn good beats.

24. Evidence "Cats & Dogs" solid LP. i still prefer DP together, but damn good

25. Raekwon "Shaolin vs Wu-Tang" Its what you expect from 2000 era Rae. Pretty good release. But i miss RZA; how do you not use 1 RZA beat? I am still ga-ga over "OBFCL Pt II" anyway...

Honorable Mention:
KRS-One & Show "Godsville" the KRS of the last few years is Unstoppable! His best lyrics keep coming. I imagine when the full Premo comes out - it will break top 5.

Wu-Tang "Legendary Weapons"

I love the Revelations doing the live jam; but not enough lyrics...and no GZA? Not as good as "Chamber Music"

Jedi Mind Tricks "Violence Begets Violence" - after the last LP (HOV) was so incredible - i find this mediocre with no Stoupe beats. No Stoupe!?!?!? sacrilege! Still like listening to Vinnie get naughty, though.

Pete Rock & Smif n Wessun; Boot Camp Click and Choclate Boy Wonder? not the best - but pretty sweet

6. Poison Planet "Undermine" Third Party Records 7"...SXE Vegan Anarcho rebellious awesomeness

Poison Planet "Boycott Everything" Refuse Records 7"

7. Sharp Objects (self-titled) Modern Action Records catchy as hell sntty SoCal punk - Bodies/Muggers, etc

8. Deep Sleep "Turn Me Off" Grave Mistake - This incredible band still masters the Descendents love, but infuses DC sound - brilliant!!

11. Payback "usque ad finem" Italian dudes on the 2nd LP, come hard edged and fast

Best of 2011: Part 4, Metal Plus

Top for me, across all genres:
Rotten Sound "Cursed" and Midnight "Satanic Royalty" (real metal, harsh thrash genius).
plus the top 6 of my doom list!
i still say that i hate classic rock, but somehow Graveyard and Blood Ceremony released the 3,4 best albums of the year. Non-stop playing for me. Insanely good.
for heavier fare, Black Pyramid continue to dominate the doom genre. top notch. And while i have always really liked Sourvein, this LP destroyed all. Gritty and savage and heavy.

Doom/Stoner/Sludge/Spooky

1. Black Pyramid "II" Meteor City
2. Blood Ceremony "Living With the Ancients" Metal Blade Records
3. Graveyard "Helsingen Blues" Nuclear Blast
4. Sourvein "Black Fang" Candlelight Records

GRIND:

2. Landmine Marathon "Gallows" Prosthetic Records
3. Wormrot "Dirge" Earache Records
4. Brutal Truth "End Time" Relapse Records
5. SSS "Problems to the Answer" Earache Records
BONUS:
Converge / Dropdead "split" Deathwish Inc.

These are bands that i have liked or not minded; released albums. Everyone is loving the two Daves' reunion in Megadeth; Anthrax to me (a classic favorite, i even like SOWN and 1/2 of Stomp 442!). I thought this would be golden...first 3 songs kicked ass and then i just got blah. Machine Head are finally eschewing that nu-metal crap and hammering out 7 minute hard ass metal. Unearth - i have always bought their LPs the first week drop without advance knowledge and loved them, and i just didn't get to it. I have loved Sepultura's last 2; but when Igor left too... I wish that they changed the name. And The Haunted was the worst waste of time...ever!)
Anyway - Stuff i will listen to eventually...

All Shall Perish "This Is Where It Ends" Nuclear Blast Records
Anthrax "Worship Music"
As Blood Runs Black "Instinct" Mediaskare Records

Best of 2011: Part 3, Crust/D-Beat/Metal-CORE

1. Reproach "The Bitter End" Deep Six Records
2. Agoraphobic Nosebleed / Despise You "And On And On..." Relapse Records
3. All Pigs Must Die "God Is War" Southern Lord Records
4. New Lows "Harvest of the Carcass" Deathwish inc
5. Seven Sisters Of Sleep s/t Southern Lord Records
6. Unkind "Harhakuvat" Relapse Records
7. Xibalba "Madre Mia Por Los Dias" Southern Lord Records

11. Tombs "Path Of Totality" Relapse Records
12. Trap Them "Darker Handcraft" Prosthetic Records
13. Raw Nerves "Burnt Skin" Inimical Records

Reproach definitely delivered the best rawest thrash spectacle of the ear with Despise You right on their heels. APMD and New Lows were quite impressive; behemoth LPs this year. Harms Way threw me for a loop at first - But then i really respected what they did. Balaclava and Xiblaba kicked serious ass; as well as Unkind and SSoS; all of which were titanic face kicking releases. and the relentless Weekend Nachos nailed it.

Two Bands i loved before (especially Victims) that i just thought their albums fell kind of flat.
Victims "A Dissident" Deathwish Inc.
Rot In Hell As Pearls Before Swine Deathwish Inc

Best of 2011: Part 2, Metalcore

1. Homicidal "State of Mind!" Eulogy Recordings
2. Most Precious Blood "Do Not Resuscitate" Bullet Tooth
3. Full Blown Chaos "s/t" Ironclad Recordings
4. Ringworm "Scars" Victory Records
5. xTyrantx "Extinction" Eulogy Recordings
6. Murder Death Kill "Investigate Infiltrate Annihilate" Mediaskare Records
7. Kickback "Et Diable Rit Avec Nous"
8. This is Hell "Black Mass" Rise Records
9. Domestic War "Ad Noctum"
10. Earth Crisis "Neutralize The Threat" Century Media Records
11. Hammerfist Dead Dreams
12. One Choice/Saving Grace "Now The War Has Two Sides" Seventh Dagger
13. Call To Preserve "Validation" Facedown Records

I could basically take 2 through 9 and rearrange in any order. all amazing releases! Ringworm killed it. Way better than the previous. FBC floored me; and i didn't even listen to "HLTC". This is Hell grabbed a new direction and ran with it. Blistering. ExC was tight. While xTYRANTX (probably in the top 3, really) and Domestic War were amazing. Heavy and dark and brutal. I wanted to like CTP before, but they always fell short. These 4 songs impressed me. and of course, MPB was the most creative fierce shit ever.... But I put Homicidal at 1 because it came out of nowhere. an "Ex-Members of" group - where i recognize no one except Dimi (who i figured if i ever heard his name it would be more "alterna" kind of band). But this thing gets straight metal at times. Tight hurricane riffs and blast beats. Tough as fuck. This release was crazy.

Best of 2011: Part 1, Hardcore

well. it's 3/4 through January. i have been busy and i am have been procrastinating on this for 3 reasons. Because SO MUCH GOOD SHIT came out this year - and i am broke and playing catch up - and that i haven;t been posting too many reviews... But anyway - let's do this. I will not get too indulgent because there are so many. But i am loving so many genres right now its hard to focus.

This was a great year for Doom Metal and Stoner Rock. It was also a huge year for that in between hc dudes playing crust/d-beat influenced metal. Those two genres were hard to keep up with. Punk and Hardcore had a slow year - but some big nods are due. The Oi!/Punk category had a big surge. I may miss some just due to trying to keep up - and due to discovering cool bands and getting their back catalog. And maybe a minority of reading this, but a good year for underground hip hop. so anyway - good shit all around....

HARDCORE:
label of the year...without a doubt: Reaper Records...
RR39 Take Offense Tables Will Turn
RR41 Wisdom In Chains Pocono Ghosts
RR42 Naysayer Down But Not Out
RR43 Turnstile Pressure to Succeed
RR44 S.O.S. I Owe You Nothing

RR48 Backtrack Darker Half

Song of the Year:
"Spit It Back by Wisdom In Chains. Hands down
Runner up:
"Heresy On The Monkeybars" by Sheer Terror..Welcome Back, Paul.

***speaking of Reaper Records, Take Offense "Tables Will Turn" was released last december and made my 2010 list. Since most people put the list out in December - it made a lot of lists this year. Again, it made mine last year. I love that album. Look forward to 2012 4 song 12" e.p.

Frontline Soldiers "Oath of Loyalty" 7" Review

Frontline Soldiers "Oath of Loyalty" United Riot Records!

Frontline Soldiers were a NYC Oi! band that began in 2000. This 7" is a recording from a 2004 session, which preceded their break up. It was dropped in 2011 after hibernating in the United Riot Records vault. FLS have a tough, low end Oi! sound that stomps the trademark of NYC on the ears. The production is solid. Good bass presence as is essential in a good Oi! sound. The mix is tight and brings all the levels together to be quite a force. It's a tough, gritty sound. It truly holds a US Oi! sound.

"Warrior Rising" especially incorporates a hardcore sound. The band tends to speed it up more often than not. Fast paced oi is invigorating and refreshing. The slow paced paced bands in constant homage to late 80s US oi tend to bore me I think that this is where the NYC really comes out. You can't be a skin there without loving punk and hardcore. And all this said - as i work to do a FFO analogy....nothing really fits perfectly. So i would say while a band can get an "Oi!" moniker where most would write off as generic; FLS really has a great, unique sound.

5 songs on this puppy and they are great ones. "American Boot Squad" starts it off and is the stand out track. Aggressive feel with a guitar part that drives it and grabs the listener. Strong musicianship all around. Fresh sound with tough power to a great production. Pick it up. Available on grey/red splatter vinyl. And again, JM Designs kills it with traditional American images.

FFO: Run Like Hell, Counterattack, FatSkins, The Traditionals. ...(Obviously)the NYC bands: First Strike, Battle Cry, Oxblood
