Dec '10.
I emailed some questions to DeaNrsv - i felt kinda like a dick; because i couldn't really be straight forward or stay too serious. Well, in true NRSV fashion, Dean handed me my ass in sarcastic reign.
This was mad fun. So crack a brew, pack a bowl, push your girl's head down and prepare to read some fun shit. Thanks to Dean, Dead City, Fresno Media.
enjoy... for anyone looking for something deep, this has no redeeming interview value
First off, why a live album? Are you guys out of ideas? And why this show, specifically? *(which sounds
incredible – and sweaty and fun and seems like it was a blast).
It was all by accident really. We never planned on putting out a live CD. It came as quite a surprise to us
as well. The show was recorded without our knowledge, in Eindhoven, NL. while we were on the ‘Still
Drinking’ tour. The sound engineer at the show recorded it onto CD, and mailed it to us several months
later. It sounds great, the performance captures our drunken madness, and all the hits are represented
and played with deadly accuracy and crushing riffage – therefore, Dead City Records wanted to put it
on CD. As for the show itself, I don’t remember much – thus the title ‘High In Holland’. According to the
recording, it sounds like everyone had a great time at the show.
You guys are getting older. You can’t possibly recover like you used to (I know I can’t)? Do you still drink
as much as you used to?(SubQuestion): while your site shows (…and has shown for 10 years) a rudimentary starting place for
beer – has your palette grown? What other beers do you drink? If a pub does not serve OldeE, what are
you sipping on?We came up with the song and title ‘Still Drinking’ because our old drummer said ‘NRSV is still drinking
even after all the other hardcore wanna-bees have all crapped out’. So, our reputation speaks for itself.
As for different beers we enjoy – whatever is free we’ll drink it. When we’re Belgium we drink Duvel,
when in Holland – Palm, in Japan we drink Asahi, or even Sake.
I am fat and hairy. Can I travel the world with you if I sit on a keg on stage in my underwear?
*(seriousy, DVB has the easiest gig in the world…)
Send us pictures of your hairy tits, and fat gut. We’ll let you know if you make the cut…….
You guys have done the NA tribute, the SOIA tribute, Rap Tribute; tons of comps; wrestling games with
ICP….Do you have any dignity? An iota of shame? Or do you just pimp yourself out to anyone that will
pay attention? In our time, NRSV has done it all. We’ve played weddings, bahmitzvahs, birthday parties, appeared on
TV shows, toured the world, recorded songs for a multitude of compilations. If you’ve got the $$, we’ll
make the time & the hits – NRSV is known for putting the party in motion – hire us at www.NRSV.com
Why in the fuck are you still doing this at your age? Is it still worth it? Where are you guys headed?
What does the future hold for NRSV?NRSV never makes any plans, or has any plans of having any future plans. That’s what keeps us
interested. In the meantime, we just keep trying to pay our bar tabs. That is a major motivation for us.
Desert Island question: Porn and Beer or a real woman but, no booze?Wow, that sounds like a shitty island to me. I want off your scary island. There is no good choice in this
case. I like it just fine right here living on LONG ISLAND – we have all the women, booze and porn we
could ever want.
Thoughts about the NYHC Documentary 15 years later?Good times. Good people. We were happy to be included in a movie that captures a period in time
where the NY scene was very much alive. NYHC has an eclectic mix of bands from the NY scene, but,
NRSV was definitely the odd-ball band in that movie due to our approach to hc/punk music. Recently,
an updated DVD version of NYHC came out w/ updated footage of each band and current interviews,
etc… We clearly remain the most photogenic group of the lot.
Also, if I had $1 for every time any of the other bands staged a ‘reunion’ show, or ‘comeback’, I’d have
enough money to make my own movie.
Thoughts on the evolution of the NRSV sound? Is it due to changing members? Or is it because tough
guy hardcore disappeared and metal got cool?NRSV always had the same approach to music – fun. That’s how we started, that continues to be
our focus. That message comes thru in our songs, performances, recordings, etc… Many of the past
members are still very much a part of what we currently do. There’s not a lot of thought that goes
into our ‘evolution’. We try to stay drunk and play the music we like. Our style of punk/ hardcore was
passed down to us from our forefathers in the scene and we carry on in their honor and tradition.
How the fuck old are you guys anyway? What was NYC like in the late ‘80s? and would your ‘then’
selves be proud of what you are doing now?Hardcore back in the 1880’s was very different – for example – dudes wore boots with buckles, and
powdered wigs, and long socks, and frocks. We used to tour in covered wagons and our tour van
had wooden wheels. Times were hard back then. Clubs were few and far between and they were
mostly real honky-tonks, or simply barns. On tour we had to worry about random Indian attacks and
raids. Also, currently, we can fly to gigs in distant places – back in the old days, airplanes were only for
the rich. It was a real D.I.Y. scene – which I miss nowadays. I think our ‘then’ selves would be very
impressed with our fancy electric guitars, and amplifiers – originally, our instruments back then were
very primitive. The electric guitar really changed everything for us.
You hate a lot – when do we get another NRSV political song with all the corruption and greed going
on? (I miss songs about homeless dudes and bigotry.) or is it the embellishment in gratuitous vices
and self-gratifying activities that react to the desperation of banal ennui in the explosion of the human
plight; such as “Pussy, Pussy, Pussy” and “Beer = Fun”. Are they a statement of escapism being the only
restitution in this bleak, hopeless world? My famous saying and motto is ‘life is short, drink a 12 pack’. That’s really as deep as it gets for me.
Why did you find such kindred spirits in Slumlords? Did you know Jeff from back in the day?The Slumlords are our brothers from other mothers. We share a kinship and love of all things related
to ‘good times’. We’ve played many shows w/ Slumlords and appear on a CD entitled ‘Songs of
Beer’ whereupon NRSV covers some Slumlords songs, and the Slumlords cover some NRSV classics
(‘Fabio’, ‘Piece of the Axxe’…). We used to party with them all the time. At one time, they asked me to
be their manager, but I called bullshit on that. The first time NRSV played at CBGB’s was with Jeff’s old
band – Breakdown. He was a gentleman and remains so. We look forward to playing future gigs w/ the
Slumlords – who are one of the best Hardcore bands of the last 10years.
Do you just drink when you go to Japan and Europe and sleep all day – or do you try to culturally edify
yourself with some food, art, history, architecture, etc? Like what? Our tours are like travelling parties for social misfits. Truly a rolling and rawkus good time. Usually,
the food, drink, culture are all excellent and accessible, and the hotels are really nice – but we don’t
do much sleeping. We live like zombies- creeping around the dark clubs at night looking for drugs and
alcohol to numb our senses.
Finally, Do you got more tunes coming out? You guys keep getting better. On the real. Our current/ newest songs are available on our website and we are always updating content with new
video’s (‘Superfuntimeparty girl’ is our latest video single - released in Japan on Jukeboxx Records).
We also have our new song ‘U R here because U R drunk’ available on our website for (free) download.
We’ve got a new DVD in the works and we are always recording new material for all the punks and skins.
NRSV always keeps on keeping on – ‘ya heard??!!
