Deep Sleep "Turn Me Off" Review

Deep Sleep "Turn Me Off" Grave Mistake

*will be released Jan 25, 2011

more DC/Dag Nasty/Leatherface than Descendents this time around. But "Be With You" recalls that Descendents love.

still blazing fast, super tight, pounding and frantic with clean vocals over it.

a little catchy, punk as fuck.

This band is awesome
This release is awesome - different enough that if you have "Three Things at Once" (or the three slabs of wax that comprise said CD)this is still a great pick up. It's enough the same for you to know that these dudes are awesome.

the key word here is "awesome". wicked awesome.

grave mistake

Best of 2010 - Hardcore (heavier...)

Again - i have reviewed most of these throughout the year as they came out. so if you want my detailed validation of these releases belonging in a "Top" list...
read the o.g. review.

The Big Names -

1. Sick of it All - "Based on a True Story" Death to Tyrants is my HC album of the decade - so it's hard to top. But SOIA is on a roll. this album is vital, current, vibrant and revitalizing. It invigorates the soul. Where DTT was dark and ominous; BOATS has a shining light (similar to the STS into BTL parallel). This album is an amalgamation of all their styles through the years. Its like a "best of..." with all new material. SOIA reigns the HC world still.

2. Madball "Empire" after two top form lp's shrouded in social and political and maturation, Madball keeps moving forward (sans Riggs...boo!)with a coarser, brasher, angrier lp. Gritty NYHC at its best

3. Terror "Keepers of the Faith" + KOTF 7" (SubZero cover and extra song) - i dare you to stand still while listening to this. These guys return to that hyper energy of ATHW. Chad Gilbert (me eating my words) brought out the best in this solid machine of true Hardcore spirit.

4. Donnybrook! "The Beast Inside" a solid return for this fierce troupe. LAHC, taking notes from Madball (Demonstrating My Style era) and Terror (obviously) - hardcore with a hip hop bounce.

5. Integrity - "The Blackest Curse" a great release. Heavy, Dark, haunting, metal encased hardcore spirit. You know...Integrity! Great current representation of Dwid's mind

6. Bane - (the 7" Barrage) 5 songs that killed it

7. nothing new, but NRSV "High in Holland" was a fantastic experience.

The tops of the core:

1. The Reticents "The Sun Rises in the East"
DC vets turn out fast crisp hardcore. the perfect sound to skate or fight or drink or revolt to. old school with sharp production. and faster than fast with some old school catchy breakdowns. Buy it on Interpunk.

2. Battle Ruins (s/t) 7" Hardcore kids (mind eraser) do and oi project with d-beat adoration. Fucking perfect - Do an LP!!!!!

3. Coke Bust "Lines in the Sand"

4. Poison Planet "Undermine" & "Oblivious" 7"s - do you like Poison Idea or Black SS? of course you do. Check these dudes out, then.

5. INJ/SYS "Spoken Word" 7"

6. H8 Inc "Clockwork Misery"

7. Cheech "PAGAN" ep

8. Fed Up! "Sheer Poetry" NYHC; better than they ever been.

9. Harms Way "No Gods no Masters" 7" + "Reality Approaches" 12"

10. Clenched Fist "Just Like Roaches"

11. Sorry Excuse "Listen With Prejudice" faster than fast. then the old school swing pops out sporadically. Old School bordering on crust love. Just friggin good.

12. Knife Fight "Isolated" 7" - out of nowhere...these dudes come back withh heavy and fast songs that outweigh King Kong Bundy.

13. Down to Nothing "All My Sons" 7" Back to True form - 6 new songs that are among their best. Great true hardcore from RVA SXE kings.

14. Watchfire "The Resurrection of Truth" Terror related sound on some songs, same infectious energy, but stands on its on completely. Other songs are simply heavy as hell riffs and breakdowns. Some times they venture into Tragedy area ("Peacekeepers"). a unique mixture that is pummeling.

15. Think Again "The End is Nigh" another Arrest Records gem. Heavy and thick guitars.

16. Molested Youth "...Eating Dinner Alone Again"

17. Slang - Split 7" with Mind Eraser - Split 7" with World Burns to Death and lp "Life Made Me Hardcore". - all vicious - low tuned, bass jangling, speed driven crusty, thrash hardcore. Pissed off Japanese dudes that can write breakdown too. Heavy.

18. Take Offense The lost, perfected Suicidal Tendencies album and Inhuman got together and had a bastard kid and buried it in the back yard. He's awoken. he's been unearthed. and he's pissed. and looking to avenge his discarded remains.

19. Dead Repreise "The Unveiling" artwork by Dave Quiggle, always Good. But, anyway, these dudes come back again. focused and furious. metalcore in that europeon blissful manner. taut and stomping.

20. At Our Heels "Misanthropy and Godlessness" furious.

21. Wolf City "Unchecked Aggression" headwalks and stagedives are coming.

22. Alpha & Omega "Life Swallower" you know where the band comes from. figure it out.

23. Rival Mob - "Hardcore for Hardcore" Late 80's NYHC worship with thrash
tendencies. Stomp with fast bursts.

24. Villain "It's Rough" Heavy hardcore from these youngens with agood song writing and a thrash appreciation.

25. Stick Together "No More Games" 7" ...good ol' core

No Redeeming Social Value Interview

Dec '10.
I emailed some questions to DeaNrsv - i felt kinda like a dick; because i couldn't really be straight forward or stay too serious. Well, in true NRSV fashion, Dean handed me my ass in sarcastic reign.

This was mad fun. So crack a brew, pack a bowl, push your girl's head down and prepare to read some fun shit. Thanks to Dean, Dead City, Fresno Media.

enjoy...
for anyone looking for something deep, this has no redeeming interview value

First off, why a live album? Are you guys out of ideas? And why this show, specifically? *(which sounds
incredible – and sweaty and fun and seems like it was a blast).

It was all by accident really. We never planned on putting out a live CD. It came as quite a surprise to us
as well. The show was recorded without our knowledge, in Eindhoven, NL. while we were on the ‘Still
Drinking’ tour. The sound engineer at the show recorded it onto CD, and mailed it to us several months
later. It sounds great, the performance captures our drunken madness, and all the hits are represented
and played with deadly accuracy and crushing riffage – therefore, Dead City Records wanted to put it
on CD. As for the show itself, I don’t remember much – thus the title ‘High In Holland’. According to the
recording, it sounds like everyone had a great time at the show.

You guys are getting older. You can’t possibly recover like you used to (I know I can’t)? Do you still drink
as much as you used to?

(SubQuestion): while your site shows (…and has shown for 10 years) a rudimentary starting place for
beer – has your palette grown? What other beers do you drink? If a pub does not serve OldeE, what are
you sipping on?

We came up with the song and title ‘Still Drinking’ because our old drummer said ‘NRSV is still drinking
even after all the other hardcore wanna-bees have all crapped out’. So, our reputation speaks for itself.
As for different beers we enjoy – whatever is free we’ll drink it. When we’re Belgium we drink Duvel,
when in Holland – Palm, in Japan we drink Asahi, or even Sake.

I am fat and hairy. Can I travel the world with you if I sit on a keg on stage in my underwear?
*(seriousy, DVB has the easiest gig in the world…)

Send us pictures of your hairy tits, and fat gut. We’ll let you know if you make the cut…….

You guys have done the NA tribute, the SOIA tribute, Rap Tribute; tons of comps; wrestling games with
ICP….Do you have any dignity? An iota of shame? Or do you just pimp yourself out to anyone that will
pay attention?

In our time, NRSV has done it all. We’ve played weddings, bahmitzvahs, birthday parties, appeared on
TV shows, toured the world, recorded songs for a multitude of compilations. If you’ve got the $$, we’ll
make the time & the hits – NRSV is known for putting the party in motion – hire us at www.NRSV.com

Why in the fuck are you still doing this at your age? Is it still worth it? Where are you guys headed?
What does the future hold for NRSV?

NRSV never makes any plans, or has any plans of having any future plans. That’s what keeps us
interested. In the meantime, we just keep trying to pay our bar tabs. That is a major motivation for us.

Desert Island question: Porn and Beer or a real woman but, no booze?

Wow, that sounds like a shitty island to me. I want off your scary island. There is no good choice in this
case. I like it just fine right here living on LONG ISLAND – we have all the women, booze and porn we
could ever want.

Thoughts about the NYHC Documentary 15 years later?

Good times. Good people. We were happy to be included in a movie that captures a period in time
where the NY scene was very much alive. NYHC has an eclectic mix of bands from the NY scene, but,
NRSV was definitely the odd-ball band in that movie due to our approach to hc/punk music. Recently,
an updated DVD version of NYHC came out w/ updated footage of each band and current interviews,
etc… We clearly remain the most photogenic group of the lot.

Also, if I had $1 for every time any of the other bands staged a ‘reunion’ show, or ‘comeback’, I’d have
enough money to make my own movie.

Thoughts on the evolution of the NRSV sound? Is it due to changing members? Or is it because tough
guy hardcore disappeared and metal got cool?

NRSV always had the same approach to music – fun. That’s how we started, that continues to be
our focus. That message comes thru in our songs, performances, recordings, etc… Many of the past
members are still very much a part of what we currently do. There’s not a lot of thought that goes
into our ‘evolution’. We try to stay drunk and play the music we like. Our style of punk/ hardcore was
passed down to us from our forefathers in the scene and we carry on in their honor and tradition.

How the fuck old are you guys anyway? What was NYC like in the late ‘80s? and would your ‘then’
selves be proud of what you are doing now?

Hardcore back in the 1880’s was very different – for example – dudes wore boots with buckles, and
powdered wigs, and long socks, and frocks. We used to tour in covered wagons and our tour van
had wooden wheels. Times were hard back then. Clubs were few and far between and they were
mostly real honky-tonks, or simply barns. On tour we had to worry about random Indian attacks and
raids. Also, currently, we can fly to gigs in distant places – back in the old days, airplanes were only for
the rich. It was a real D.I.Y. scene – which I miss nowadays. I think our ‘then’ selves would be very

impressed with our fancy electric guitars, and amplifiers – originally, our instruments back then were
very primitive. The electric guitar really changed everything for us.

You hate a lot – when do we get another NRSV political song with all the corruption and greed going
on? (I miss songs about homeless dudes and bigotry.) or is it the embellishment in gratuitous vices
and self-gratifying activities that react to the desperation of banal ennui in the explosion of the human
plight; such as “Pussy, Pussy, Pussy” and “Beer = Fun”. Are they a statement of escapism being the only
restitution in this bleak, hopeless world?

My famous saying and motto is ‘life is short, drink a 12 pack’. That’s really as deep as it gets for me.

Why did you find such kindred spirits in Slumlords? Did you know Jeff from back in the day?

The Slumlords are our brothers from other mothers. We share a kinship and love of all things related
to ‘good times’. We’ve played many shows w/ Slumlords and appear on a CD entitled ‘Songs of
Beer’ whereupon NRSV covers some Slumlords songs, and the Slumlords cover some NRSV classics
(‘Fabio’, ‘Piece of the Axxe’…). We used to party with them all the time. At one time, they asked me to
be their manager, but I called bullshit on that. The first time NRSV played at CBGB’s was with Jeff’s old
band – Breakdown. He was a gentleman and remains so. We look forward to playing future gigs w/ the
Slumlords – who are one of the best Hardcore bands of the last 10years.

Do you just drink when you go to Japan and Europe and sleep all day – or do you try to culturally edify
yourself with some food, art, history, architecture, etc? Like what?

Our tours are like travelling parties for social misfits. Truly a rolling and rawkus good time. Usually,
the food, drink, culture are all excellent and accessible, and the hotels are really nice – but we don’t
do much sleeping. We live like zombies- creeping around the dark clubs at night looking for drugs and
alcohol to numb our senses.

Finally, Do you got more tunes coming out? You guys keep getting better. On the real.

Our current/ newest songs are available on our website and we are always updating content with new
video’s (‘Superfuntimeparty girl’ is our latest video single - released in Japan on Jukeboxx Records).
We also have our new song ‘U R here because U R drunk’ available on our website for (free) download.
We’ve got a new DVD in the works and we are always recording new material for all the punks and skins.
NRSV always keeps on keeping on – ‘ya heard??!!

The Broadsiders "Pressed to Kill" Review

The Broadsiders "Pressed to Kill" 10" Longshot Music

While not a duplicate, rip-off, or even an homage to the list of bands coming; The Broadsiders find elements of some of my favorite oi/punk bands from the last two decades: Soldier 76, Brassknuckle Boys, No Holds Barred, The Templars, The GC5, and The Bruisers ("Cruisin'..." era). These boys are from Texas and tell you repeatedly. That Lone Star Pride is blunt and obvious. The Texan dirty rock and roll is infused into a blazing punk rock sound; on a strong Oi! backbone.

This is a hard-edged sound on top of an infectious rock and roll foundation. Often there is a frantic idle bubbling of tension backed by a wandering twang of guitar strings. Lots of energy and it is frothing over this tight, crisp unit of chords and drums. Lots of parts to raise a glass to and sing along with.

Note the bullets on the cover. This is Texas. and it ain't the happy part. Are you up for a ride in a broken down truck on a dusty road to nowhere? Grasping rot gut, a warm High Life and a shotgun. The man took half your paycheck, government is taking over, your back hurts, boss cut overtime, society spits on you and your girl is a little too flirtacious with your brother. this is the soundtrack.

Best of the chaotic derisions:

SSSP - No Resistance Split 7" Review

So, i had never heard No Resistance; and i can't even remember why i wanted to check them out. Probably just cuz they had a split with SSSP. But i grabbed their CDep and this split...holy shit, this is fantastic. These dudes have a fresh sound that is exhilirating. They offer up 2 songs here. A darker Cock Sparrer comes to mind.

No Resistance:
"You Can't Reach Me" Self-proclaimed "brickwall" sound description fits quite well. This is a fast, catchy tune of pub-rock style. The lo-fi Templars style is cool; but tight, as opposed to a 45 Adapters, say. But all in the same vein. Real song structure and catchy vocals. Pissed, but not overdone.

"Don't Turn to Me" Again with a nod to SLF and Adverts, but restrained. And that tension is used to deliver a bulldog of a song. Again, Catchy chorus over lo-fi tight song writing. This is skinhead music at its best. That On File, Evil Conduct mature and crisp sound. Smarter lyrics than the "riot/pub/drunk/struggle" quagmire.

S.S.S.P.:
"Loss for Words" Blazing fast, lo-fi, old school hc. No 2 ways about it. If you haven't cuhgt these dudes yet: Fed Up!, stripped down Downlow, Warzone, KYI, all come to mind; even euro thrash like Vitamin X, Voorhees and Violent Arrest (and that's just the V's!). This is heavy. A nice breakdown in the middle makes me wanna jump in the pit. One final burst of speed to the end! sweet track.

"Someone's Gonna Die" by Blitz. You know it. You love it. They do a rough and tumble version of it, as it should be. Sounds like 86 Mentality doin it. great job.

So pick this up - you get handsome colors as a choice. KOI always does brilliant job with its vinyl. and they put out top quality bands.

Weird is SSSP being a 3 piece; weirder is Vinnie NOT on drums. But hey, still rocks. They continue their brilliance in resurrecting that Skinhead Hardcore sound. Glad someone is.

No Resistance, being my 1st dose, is the real treat here. so good. off to review their ep!

Decry 7" 1983 link

Decry 7"

holy shit. i never heard of this band; but they mix the best of all worlds. They were a SoCal Hardcore band. But instead of the letting the sunshine soak into too much, they focus on the dark side of life and sound; a la Adolescents or Battalion of Saints. Great, fast punk with hints of metal; but total hardcore. There is a good Circle Jerks sound in the songs. These songs lash out through your phonograph to scar your ears. Get into some intense self-abuse.

goodbadmusic.com does a good summation in one paragraph - give a read.
also check KFTH for a discography.

This 7" is essential.
